Baked Alaska

Baked Alaska is a dessert with sponge cake, ice cream, and meringue, baked briefly to brown the meringue.

Instructions

  1. Place the sponge cake on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. Spread the softened vanilla ice cream evenly over the sponge cake, leaving a small border around the edge.
  3. Freeze the cake and ice cream until firm, about 2 hours.
  4. Preheat the oven to 230 degrees Celsius.
  5. In a clean bowl, beat the egg whites with cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
  6. Gradually add the granulated sugar to the egg whites, beating until stiff, glossy peaks form.
  7. Fold in the vanilla extract gently into the meringue.
  8. Remove the cake and ice cream from the freezer and cover completely with the meringue, sealing all edges.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 3-5 minutes, or until the meringue is golden brown.
  10. Serve immediately or return to the freezer for later serving.

Prep

  • Soften vanilla ice cream at room temperature for 10-15 minutes.
  • Freeze the assembled cake and ice cream for at least 2 hours.
