Rote grutze

Rote Grütze is a traditional German dessert prepared by simmering mixed berries with sugar and thickening with cornstarch.

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the mixed berries and sugar. Stir gently to mix.
  2. Add the water to the saucepan and bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  3. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes until the berries are soft.
  4. In a small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in a little cold water to make a slurry.
  5. Gradually stir the cornstarch slurry into the berry mixture, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  6. Continue to simmer for another 2-3 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and lemon juice.
  8. Pour the Rote Grütze into a serving bowl or individual dessert cups and let it cool to room temperature.
  9. Serve chilled with a dollop of whipped heavy cream on top.
