Khatti Daal (Sour Lentil Soup)

Khatti Daal is a tangy lentil soup prepared by simmering lentils with tamarind, spices, and herbs for a flavorful dish.

Instructions

  1. Soak tamarind paste in warm water and set aside.
  2. In a pot, add rinsed toor dal and water. Bring to a boil, then simmer until the dal is soft and mushy.
  3. In a separate pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter.
  4. Add chopped onions, minced garlic, and curry leaves to the pan. Sauté until onions are translucent.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes, green chilies, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
  6. Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well. Add tamarind water and salt. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  7. Adjust seasoning as needed. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.

  • Soak tamarind paste in warm water for 30 minutes.
